The traditional (T) 'Birthstone by Month' gemstones were societal traditions in the 15th Century (1401-1500) until the National Association of Jewellers created a Modern List which was fixed in 1912 (*). More affordable alternatives were added to the list in 1952, 2002 and 2016.
